Parapsychology and the arts of occultism have been assimilated into modern religions in a certain fashion; this transition and integration has not always been smooth, and there is a good example of that in Germany.
The belief in some sort of "anima" or "soul" that lies beyond the animation of certain objects that we define as alive is probably a million years old and since our early evolutionary stages everything we humans did and do have been stained by this belief.
Over millennia we developed a certain mental scheme in which such ideas have a place and somehow coexist with other rational arguments that form the basis of the scientific method. This new rational is becoming increasingly more important in almost every society but the occult always leaves footprints.
